Health & Safety Week: Our Culture of Safety
At Marco, health and safety isn’t something we talk about once a year, it’s built into how we work every day. Health and Safety Week is a good reminder to recognize the work that happens behind the scenes to keep our team and our job sites safe.
Here are five key areas where we’ve made safety a core part of how we operate – and why it matters.
One: A Culture of Accountability
From the top down and the ground up, we treat safety as a shared responsibility. That means:
- Every site starts with a detailed safety plan.
- Our superintendents lead by example.
- Workers are encouraged and expected to speak up when something isn’t right.
“Safety is not just a set of rules we follow; it’s a mindset we cultivate every day. It’s about looking out for each other.” — Lisa Rice, Safety Director
Two: COR™-Certified
We’ve earned and maintained COR™ (Certificate of Recognition) certification, which is an inter-provincially recognized standard for safety management in the construction industry. COR™ verifies that our safety program meets or exceeds the safety standards set by provincial and national safety regulations.
COR™ certification requires us to regularly review our safety practices, conduct internal audits, and ensure we meet the highest standards for the well-being of our team. This process is independent, and our success means our safety practices are actively evaluated, updated, and improved on a regular basis.
We’re proud to say that we are COR™-certified in every province we operate in, demonstrating that no matter where we work, our commitment to safety is always the same.
Three: ISO Certified
In addition to COR™, we’re proud to be certified in three major ISO standards that help guide how we work safely, efficiently, and responsibly:
- ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety
- ISO 9001 – Quality Management
- ISO 14001 – Environmental Management
These certifications reflect a company-wide commitment to doing things right, from how we manage risk to how we deliver consistent quality and minimize our environmental impact.
ISO certification puts us in line with global best practices. It shows clients, partners, and our team that we don’t just talk about safety, quality, and sustainability, we build it into everything we do.
Four: Ongoing Safety Training
At Marco, we don’t just train new hires and move on. Our team takes part in regular safety refreshers, toolbox talks, and site-specific hazard reviews. Whether it’s working at heights, WHMIS, or mental health awareness, we treat education as continuous.
This reinforces best practices, ensuring safety becomes second nature, and keeps everyone up-to-date on new regulations, equipment, and techniques. Regular training also empowers employees to speak up and take ownership of safety.
Five: Everyone Goes Home Safe
At the end of the day, this is the outcome that matters most. Not just avoiding incidents but building a workplace where people are confident they’ll get through their shift safe, every time.
It’s about:
- Clean, well-organized job sites.
- Clear roles and responsibilities.
- Constant communication and planning.
- Respect for the people we work with, and the communities we build in.
“A culture of safety starts with every person on the team. It’s about creating an environment where safety is a shared responsibility.” — Lisa Rice, Safety Director
At Marco, we’re committed to making sure everyone on our sites is empowered to go home safely every day, and Health and Safety Week is a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, and how much further we’ll go.
